Nominated to Ship of The Year 2021– a recognition for electric passenger ferries
One of our projects together with Damen Shipyards, is nominated to the prestigious award, Ship of The Year by KNVTS in the Netherlands. This is an important recognition for electrical passenger ferries and will lead the way for future projects and innovation in this area.

The award will be presented for the 23rd time this year, and the price ceremony will be held on the 1st of November 2021 at the Maritime Awards Gala.
The nominees are
Ferry “Bryggen” designed and built by Damen Shipyards Group in Gorinchem
Spring ferry “NZK-100” designed and built by Holland Shipyards Group in Hardinxveld-Giessendam
Foot spring “Düsternbrook” designed and built by Holland Shipyards Group in Hardinxveld-Giessendam.
About the project
The Bryggen Ferries project was the first fleet of fully electric passenger vessels in operation and was an impressive and important milestone for maritime electrification when it launched in 2019.
The fleet consists of seven electric vessels operating the waterways of the Danish capital, Copenhagen. The world leading public transport company Arriva is the operator.
The jury selected the nominees based on criteria of design, economy, sustainability and environment, safety and construction process.
All seven ferries are completely emission free, and the choice of electric propulsion and energy system was chosen with the demanding operating profile in mind.
The ferries are in operation 17 hours per day, 365 days a year. Every trip takes about an hour, and the ferries are fully charged in under ten minutes 17 times a day. This is an automatic process with a mooring system that establishes a secure connection between the ship and charging station on shore.
The LTO chemistry – inherently safe
LTO battery systems from Echandia was chosen because of its inherent safety aspects, and to keep weight and overall system dimensions to a minimum while at the same time meeting demands for supercharging, durability, and lifespan.

The innovative design, both of the actual vessel, as well as the mooring and charging systems to the energy system proves that electric vessels, aside its low environmental footprint also can be advantageous from an operational and economic standpoint.
Echandia is looking forward to follow the awards ceremony, with hopes that an electric fleet will steal the show.
