Icebreakers operate in some of the harshest maritime environments in the world. Extreme cold, high power demands, limited installation space, and the need for absolute reliability place unique requirements on onboard energy systems. Echandia’s battery systems are designed to meet these challenges.
Echandia’s (LTO) battery technology performs reliably in low temperatures and under high and repeated power loads, making it well suited for hybrid icebreaker operations. In hybrid configurations, the battery system supports conventional propulsion by delivering peak power during demanding operating modes, improving overall energy efficiency and reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
Safety and reliability are critical for vessels operating in remote and ice-covered waters, where assistance may be far away. In 2020, a new fleet of electric commuter ferries was introduced in Copenhagen, setting a global benchmark for emission-free public transport on water. In June 2025, Molslinjen introduced Nerthus, a fully electric RoPax ferry serving the route between Ballen on Samsø and Kalundborg in Denmark. The vessel is the first of two new electrified ferries commissioned by Molslinjen and built at Cemre Shipyard in Turkey.
